About :

A documentary-fiction film installation showing a contemporary take on the Wuxia genre and Chinese spirit mediums in Singapore. The film shows a female protagonist on a journey to seek revenge for her deceased loved one. Using a mix of Shi Yun’s documentation and found footage from cinema, the film re-contextualises the past and creates a place of presence. The narrative blurs the lines between truth and fiction, creating an uncertain world in which justice may never be served.

The sound is composed and performed by Zhuyang Liu with traditional Chinese instruments as the main elements, including Guzheng, Chinese bamboo flute, hulusi, guitar and Chinese percussion together with other electronic instruments to embellish. The sound landscape of the film serves as an important role in opening up the parallel world throughout the narrative. Modernizing the music composition in old Wuxia films by using Guzheng as the leading instrument, bringing in fantasy resonance, space and divine textures to the colour. Whilst Chinese drums, Gong, Cymbals as the dual instrument.

It awakens people's memories of "Wuxia, 武侠", and collaged the timelines into a contemporary vision. The improvisational...  more

About:

A group of intrepid pilgrims, purging their impurities, are setting out on a quest to discover the Water Dragon Temple deep in the hinterland of an ancient region of old China. They believe the forest path near the tea house is the start point for this illustrious calling. Armed with essential materials, blue butterflies, and spring lanterns they pass waterfalls, stepping lightly through the dawn mist near the rainbow windmill. Watched only by the unseen owls they follow the meandering silver river. Suddenly they hear the call and now seeing with clear eyes finally arrive at a willing surrender, celebrating their achievement together by flying carp kites towards the paper moon.

Paul Cheneour and Zhuyang Liu agreed to this great musical collaboration request at the Quantumleap Studios having only recently been introduced. They began playing with a symbiosis and an empathy that is rarely encountered today. Together they have created an album full of colour, dynamism, and expression with a rich tapestry of sounds that illuminates both outer and inner magical landscapes.
